Will Rogers  (1879-1935)

William Penn Adair Rogers was a cowboy, skilled horseman, roper, performer, actor, journalist, writer, wit, and unofficial world diplomat. He became one of the most popular persons in the country.

Rogers was born near Oologah in what was then Indian Territory, later Oklahoma.  He was raised on his father’s ranch where he acquired skills as a cowboy, especially rope tricks.

Educated at military school, his first livelihood came in connection with the Boer War.  He transported pack animals across the South Atlantic from Buenos Aires to South Africa for use in the war.  He stayed in Johannesburg for a short while, appearing there in Wild West shows where he drew upon his expertise with horse and lasso.

He returned to the United States and entered vaudeville as a trick rope artist.  His first New York appearance was in 1905.  He subsequently appeared in the Zigfeld Follies, working humorous topical and political comment into his act.

At this time he started writing a weekly newspaper column, which later evolved into a daily column, Daily Telegrams, syndicated in 400 newspapers.

He had a radio broadcast and appeared in 71 movies in the 20s and 30s. His films included A Connecticut Yankee (1931), State Fair (1933),  David Harum (1934) and Steamboat ‘Round the Bend (1935).

During his lifetime, he traveled around the globe three times -- meeting people, covering wars, talking about peace and learning everything possible. He wrote six books including Rogerisms--the Cowboy Philosopher on Prohibition (1919), Illiterate Digest (1924), and There's Not a Bathing Suit in Russia (1927).

He was a guest at the White House and leaders of the world sought his opinions.

Rogers loved flying. It was on a flight to Alaska in 1935 with the daring one-eyed Oklahoma pilot Wiley Post that their plane crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska, and both men lost their lives
