Franklin P. Adams

These are the saddest of possible words:

    "Tinker to Evers to Chance"

Trio of bear cubs and fleeter than birds:

    "Tinker to Evers to Chance"

Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,

Making a Giant hit into a double,

Words that are weighty with nothing but trouble:

    "Tinker to Evers to Chance."

                -F.P.A. (Baseball's Sad Lexicon)

Franklin Pierce Adams.  1881 - 1960.  Signs work as F. P. A.  Popular American newspaper columnist and author, best known for his humorous column, "The Conning Tower."  In 1938 he became a member of the cast of Information Please, a popular radio and, later, television quiz program.

(Who were Tinker, Evers and Chance?
They were the Chicago Cubs famous double play combination from 1903-10;   Shortstop: Joe Tinker (1880-1948), Second Base: Johnny Evers (1883-1947) and First Base: Frank Chance (1877-1924).  All three managed the Cubs and made the Hall of Fame.)
